THE STORY

Building community as an adult is surprisingly hard.

Finding a place where you can be creative, take risks, and feel genuinely welcomed can be even harder.

In 2016, I had recently moved to Marin without much of a social circle. What I wanted was connection—a place where people could gather, laugh, create, and build something together.

So I rented a room, started an improv class, and invited people to show up.

A few curious strangers did.

Then they came back.

They brought friends.

Classes grew into long-term play groups. Some groups took the leap into performance. We added coaches. Applied improv found its way into local businesses, community organizations, treatment programs, and senior centers. What began as a simple experiment gradually grew into a thriving community.

Today, Improv Marin is home to performers, students, professionals, retirees, artists, parents, therapists, and people who simply wanted to meet others and try something new.

Because while improv is funny, it isn't really about comedy.

It's about connection.

It's about learning to trust yourself when you don't know what's coming next.

It's about listening deeply, supporting others, taking creative risks, and discovering that you're capable of more than you thought.

The laughter comes naturally when people feel free enough to be playful, present, and more fully themselves.

You don't need to be funny.

You don't need experience.

You don't need to know what you're doing.

You just need a willingness to show up and say "yes" to something new.

People walk through our doors looking for different things—a creative outlet, new friends, greater confidence, a challenge, a sense of belonging, or simply a reason to get out of the house.

Many discover they were looking for all of those things at once.

At its heart, Improv Marin exists to create opportunities for connection through play.

We come together to laugh.

We come together to grow.

We come together to belong.

We come for the improv.

We stay for the connection.

Keep it playful.
Keep it connected.
Keep it unscripted.
